Dream Wedding Plans Underway

A wedding begins like any other event: hours of planning, menu tastings, and countless visions and ideas exchanged between the ecstatic couple and their planner. The 2013 Outer Banks Wedding Association Dream Wedding couple recently completed a whirlwind weekend filled with all the above and more!

Beginning their romantic weekend at the First Colony Inn, Lauren and Tim met with their wedding planner, Kerri Catino-Nason from The Proper Setting.

“Kerri had arranged everything for us, which was wonderful,” explained Lauren. “We had no idea how overwhelming meeting with so many vendors could be, but Kerri made it run smoothly, which made it more enjoyable.”

The first order of business after the couple sat down with their wedding planner was to look at Lauren’s Pinterest account and discuss likes, dislikes and overall vision for wedding day colors and themes.

“They have decided to have a formal beach wedding with a black and white color scheme,” said Kerri. “Though the ceremony will be on the beach, it will not have your typical Outer Banks beach wedding feel, but will still have the picturesque Outer Banks view.”

Once the color scheme and theme of the wedding had been discussed, the eager couple met with Rev. Shirley Anne from Carolina Wedding Co. After planning the details of the ceremony, they met with the talented Genevieve Stewart of Genevieve Stewart Photography & Films to discuss their vision for their wedding photos.

Not leaving any detail to chance, Lauren and Tim met with other talented Outer Banks photographers, Sarah D’Ambra from Sarah D’Ambra Photography who will be handling Lauren’s bridal portraits at Bodie Island Lighthouse, and Rich Coleman of ColemanShots who has the exciting honor of photographing Lauren’s “trash the dress” shoot after the wedding, which is a unique tradition many of today’s brides are embracing. In addition, he will photograph Tim’s bachelor outing at Nags Head Golf Links. Alexandra Couey of ALC Wedding Photography and Daniel and Kate Pullen of Daniel Pullen Photography will be photographing Lauren and Tim’s rehearsal dinner.

Another exciting adventure this Dream couple will experience is a thrilling kiteboarding lesson provided by Watermen’s Retreat/Real Watersports, as well as a hang gliding session provided by Kitty Hawk Kites. The exhilarating kiteboarding session will be captured by the award-winning Daniel Pullen Photography.

“This couple will be photographed throughout this entire experience, capturing unforgettable moments that will last a lifetime,” explains Kerri Catino-Nason.

The photography sessions have already gotten underway with Lauren and Tim’s recent engagement photos being taken at the Whalehead Club this past weekend by Sarah Kimmel of Sarah Kimmel Photography.

After the couple worked with individual photographers to discuss their vision for their big day and overall experience, Lauren and Tim had a tasting with Black Pelican Catering.

“Everything we tasted from Black Pelican was beyond amazing. Knowing they would be providing the food made us that much more excited for the reception,” explains Lauren.

Though food and pictures are an integral part of every wedding celebration, Kerri wasn’t about to let Lauren and Tim overlook details like floral arrangements from the very talented and creative Holiday House Weddings & Events, as well as Tim’s attire from Black Tie Affair.

“We had no idea how much went into planning a wedding, and while I am typically Type-A with a need to be in control, I have complete trust in Kerri with The Proper Setting,” says a relaxed and relieved Lauren. “Each of the vendors here at the Outer Banks Wedding Association are eager to work with us, and each other, to create an experience that is all our own. We already know this is going to be our Dream Wedding.”

As any wedding planner will tell you, a happy bride and groom make for an enjoyable planning process and a beautiful day.

“This wedding is going to be stunning. It’s difficult to put into words how excited I am for Lauren and Tim and their guests,” says Kerri.

2012 Dream Wedding – Through the Bride’s Eyes

“As I sat in the auditorium with all of the other hopeful brides, I had no clue what was in store for me,” starts Shana Thompson, winner of the Outer Banks Wedding Association’s Dream Wedding Giveaway. Having seen many wonderful vendors at the annual expo, Shana was already beginning to plan her wedding.  “I thought, it would be nice to see David Tutera [host of WE TV’s My Fair Wedding with David Tutera] speak and see the reaction of the bride.”  What Shana didn’t expect was to hear David Tutera call her name. “All of a sudden I got nervous when he went to pull the name. When he was trying to read the name and stumbled on how to pronounce it, I couldn’t believe it.  When he said my last name, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion.  It was pure joy because of what it meant for us and our parents. It was all very surreal.”

What’s a bride to do when she just won a wedding valued at over $45,000?  Tell her groom of course!  “I wanted to tell him in person so I could see his reaction.  Our moms and I walked into the condo where we were staying that weekend and I showed him the board of what was included in the package.  He and the dads had been looking at places for guests to stay while the women were at the expo.   I think they all thought we were pulling one over on them.  Brad was speechless.  It took some convincing before he believed me!”

From the moment David Tutera called Shana’s name – and she finally convinced Brad she won – they began the planning process, visiting the Outer Banks numerous times and enjoying all OBX has to offer. These planning trips were part of the fun, explained Shana. “We really enjoyed the trips we took to the Outer Banks to plan our wedding because we really got to know the area and the vendors we worked with, and all of the places we had the opportunity to stay at were also lovely.”

One of the Dream Couple’s favorite pre-wedding activities was hang gliding with Kitty Hawk Kites.  “Hang gliding was awesome and we would like to go back. We enjoyed it so much that we put flyers in our welcome bags for our guests hoping others might stop in and enjoy it as much as we did.”

While the Dream Wedding package was very much a dream come true, it was important to Shana and Brad that the wedding remain intimate and uniquely “them,” so Shana was adamant about adding personal details in everything from the bridal portraits - “I surprised Brad with a bridal portrait print of me wearing eye black and holding his authentic University of Tennessee football helmet” – to the table numbers - “Thanks to Heather with HLR Designs, our table numbers had pictures of us on them, at that age, with a fun fact about us.”

As a bride heads into her new life, it’s important to bring the past along.  ”I had a lot of ‘something olds’ as I wore my Mother’s veil – it’s so beautiful and it had special meaning. I also held a bonnet that my grandmother gave my Mother when I was a baby. It was snipped and made into a hanky.” Blending the old – her grandmother’s pearl necklace and a ring that was Brad’s great grandmother’s – with new earrings, a beautiful new beach glass bracelet made by Low Tide Jewels, and pearl foot jewelry, Shana made sure those she loved were represented that day.

It was also important to Shana to have all the men in her life take part in her walk down the aisle.  “Having my brother, father and step-father all walk me a part of the way down the aisle was very important to me.  I thought that was unique and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”

The ceremony, taking place under a soft fog and cool breeze on a secluded beach in South Nags Head, was officiated by Bonnie Williams.  “She did an amazing job. She was so great to work with.”  Adding a special touch to the ceremony was the dove release, donated by When Doves Fly, “It was such a memorable addition to our ceremony. It also made for beautiful pictures.”

Shirley Cook, of Sugar Snap Events, describes Shana’s vision for her wedding, “She wanted a warm, inviting and shabby chic look so we went with Peonies, Snapdragon, Spray Roses, Baby’s Breath, and Dusty Miller in whites, corals, and pinks.  Touches of natural twine added a rustic element.”  Shana was thrilled with the results. “She really understood my vision for flowers and she was just so sweet.  The bouquets and boutonnieres turned out so perfect.”

In any wedding, the photographers and videographers hold the key to lasting memories. Without these talented individuals, couples wouldn’t have images to look at on their Silver Anniversary, and the collection of Dream Wedding photographers and videographers didn’t disappoint. “All of the photographers and videographers were awesome. We are so thankful for all of the photos and the video that captured this special time in our lives,” praised the grateful bride.

While there is an abundance of memories, and many people who made this Dream Wedding happen, Shana and Brad were beyond grateful for everything the Outer Banks Wedding Association Dream Team provided.  “I always thought of the Outer Banks as a magical place and I still do. There’s something really beautiful about the way the weather and your surroundings change day to day.  We now have a lot of places and vendors that we would recommend for an Outer Banks wedding.  There’s a reason why it is one of the top wedding destinations in the U.S.  We are ready to go back, and so are our family and friends.”

Dreams Do Come True – A Dream Wedding 2012

“This day I will marry my friend, the one I laugh with, live for, dream with, love.”  –unknown

There is always something unique about the morning of your wedding. The birds seems to chirp a bit louder, the waves crash at a peaceful and rhythmic consistency and all seems to be right with the world; almost as though everyone knows just how special the pending occasion is to the eager couple.

On May 3rd, our Dream Wedding Couple woke to that feeling of peace and calm. Meanwhile, the Outer Banks Dream Team was working tirelessly on their wedding day duties. In true form, a trusted team of professionals ensures the bride enjoys her day by handling details the bride may or may not be aware of – one of many benefits of a wedding coordinator. Today, event pro Rachel Moser at 11th Hour Events made sure  Shana was simply enjoying this once in a lifetime moment with her friends and family.

The 2012 Dream Wedding was all about capturing details. From the moment this couple took flight high above the OBX with Kitty Hawk Kites to the ceremonial release of white doves by When Does Fly, this couple’s excitement was captured by the Outer Banks’ most talented photographers and videographers – Daniel Pullen of Pullen Photography, Sarah Kimmel of Sarah Kimmel Photography, Rich Coleman of Coleman Shots, Rachael Hyde of Rachael Hyde Photography , Benny Baldwin of Baldwin Video and Ryan Moser of  11th Hour Events.

Ensuring the wedding ceremony went off without a hitch was Blue Ocean Events. Officiating the much anticipated ceremony was Bonnie Williams, Minister at Hatteras Wedding Ministries. After the kiss, the fun-loving couple opted to have “Good to be Loved by You” as their recessional music performed by Kim Kalman before heading to their reception at Mallards Marsh. Having enjoyed delectable dishes by caterer 1587, and a gourmet cake by Great Cakes! of the Outer Banks, guests danced the night away to tunes by Outer Banks DJ.

From the wedding invitations by HLR Designs to the bride’s custom jewelry handmade from beach glass and pearls by Low Tide Jewels, this Dream Wedding was one for the ages and the Outer Banks Wedding Association couldn’t have been more pleased with the way our 2012 Dream Wedding turned out.

The Outer Banks Wedding Association would like to congratulate our Dream Wedding Couple, Shana and Brad, on their beautiful wedding. From the moment they were selected as the winners of the Dream Wedding Giveaway, Shana and Brad have shared with us their vision for their ideal ceremony and our outstanding Outer Banks Wedding Dream Team worked tirelessly to make their Dream a reality.

Check back next week for an in-depth look at everything it took to make this Dream Wedding happen, as we recap the festivities in their entirety.

Excitement Builds for a Dream Wedding Event

The events leading up to a wedding speak to the personality of the couple, especially our Dream Wedding Couple, Brad and Shana. If you’ve been following their story, you know this couple thrives on adventure and cherishes their loved ones.

Destination weddings are always a unique combination of wedding and vacation, and Brad and Shana are savoring every moment during their time on the Outer Banks. From hang gliding to glamorous bridal portraits in historical gardens, these two are creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The morning after Shana and her girlfriends danced the night away at her bachelorette party, hosted by Port O’ Call and sponsored by OBX Romance Store, the men met for a round of golf at Nags Head Links  where Daniel Pullen, of Daniel Pullen Photography, was on hand to capture Brad’s last round of golf as a single man.

After an exciting evening the night before, the ladies spent time relaxing and celebrating Shana at her bridal luncheon at the Inn on Pamlico Sound. Later, joined by her loved ones at the Cypress House Inn, a serene bed and breakfast and local historic landmark, Shana was treated to a quaint bridal tea.

After the wedding party practiced their parts, and the Dream Wedding Couple  rehearsed their vows, they headed out for a night of good food, fantastic company and tunes provided by the talented Barryoke Karaoke Entertainment.

Here’s to Brad and Shana! May your wedding truly be an event of which dreams are made – Cheers!

The Dream Begins – Shana & Brad, 2012 Dream Wedding

You know that giddy feeling you experience when you’re about to attend a spectacular wedding that’s sure to knock your socks off? That is precisely how we, the Outer Banks Wedding Association, are feeling as we prepare for our Dream Wedding couple to say their vows.  Brad and Shana, the lucky winners of our $45,000 Dream Wedding giveaway at our annual expo, have arrived in the Outer Banks and they are all the buzz about town.

While wedding planning this spring, these two found time to relax in their hotel, the historic First Colony Inn. The inn, found on the National Register of Historic Places, was first erected in 1932, and courtesy of its recent rehabilitation has been brought back to its original grandeur. The only surviving “beach-style” hotel, guests can step back in time to an era filled with live music, intimate gatherings and a relaxed, yet sophisticated feel.

What’s a couple to do when they need to relax from the stress of decision making? These two took to the skies. Literally. Taking a leap of faith, Shana and Brad went hang gliding with Kitty Hawk Kites, the largest, oldest and most well-known hang gliding school in the world. Nothing says, “we’re ready for anything” quite like soaring through the air, high above the Outer Banks. This thrilling experience will be something they can marvel at for years to come thanks to the photography by Rachael Hyde, and videography by Ryan Moser at 11th Hour Events.

Upon her decent, Shana was pampered in preparation for her bridal portrait session, captured by the talented Rich Coleman of Coleman Shots  at the impressive Elizabethan Gardens, and documented in video by 11th Hour Events. Opened in 1960, this serene yet spectacular garden pays homage to the first English colonists who came to North America in the late 1500’s. It is this sacred spot where Sir Walter Raleigh first attempted to colonize the New World under Queen Elizabeth I, explaining its significance to our beloved Outer Banks.

If these are the activities that took place months ahead of the wedding, you can imagine what’s in store for this lucky couple in the coming days here on the Outer Banks. This is truly going to be a Dream Wedding for this deserving couple, and it could not have been done without the amazing Outer Banks Wedding Association Dream Team  vendors.

Stay tuned for the big event…

2012 Dream Wedding: The Announcement

After winning the 2012 Dream Wedding during the Outer Banks Wedding Weekend, Shana returned to share the surprise with Brad.

Shana, Tell us how you told Brad and What was his reaction?  I wanted to tell him in person so I could see his reaction and he was speechless. It took some convincing before he believed me.  The Moms and I walked into the condo we were staying in that weekend and I showed him the board of what was included in the package. He and the Dads had been looking at places for guests to stay while the women were at the expo. I think they all thought we were pulling one over on them, but they eventually believed us.

Brad, What did you think when Shana told you she had won the Dream Wedding?  I was a little frightened at first because she was screaming at me and I couldn’t decipher exactly what she was saying. After she was able to catch her breath and I was able to understand that she had won the Dream Wedding Package, I was ecstatic and felt so blessed. I think Shana was more excited after winning the Dream Wedding Package than she was after I proposed. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and I am looking forward to marrying Shana.

Shana, Describe your experience meeting David Tutera. What was it like? What were some tips that he gave you in your private consultation? The entire experience in the auditorium that day was completely surreal. I felt like I was dreaming. I really just thought I was there to see David Tutera and watch a lucky bride win this prize. Right before he pulled my name, I got really nervous, so when he stumbled over my name I just knew it was me. People have always had trouble saying my name correctly. It’s pronounced ‘shay-nuh’. I walked up on stage and just couldn’t believe I was standing there. I was just taking it all in.

David Tutera is exactly how you would expect him to be from his show. He is so sweet and genuine. I jokingly asked him if he’d come to the wedding, as if he doesn’t have enough weddings to go to.

He really gave me a lot of great advice. He emphasized that we need to tell our story, and incorporate who we are in the details. That is really important to me.

I told him that time with our loved ones is really important to us. I’ve always heard about how fast the wedding day goes and I really want it to last. He suggested that Brad and I see each other before the ceremony. He said that he always has brides that are set on having their groom see them for the first time as they walk down the aisle. He said that the “moment” the bride is looking for isn’t always a moment because of the nerves and all the people there watching. By seeing each other before the ceremony it will give us time to do all of our pictures so that we can get right to the reception after the ceremony and spend more time with our loved ones.

He also gave me advice on special ceremony details, music suggestions and lighting tips. I’m so thankful that he took the time to meet with me. I know he didn’t have to give me a consultation, so I think it says a lot about him that he would take the time to do that. It was a special bonus that I am grateful for.

2012 Dream Wedding: The Proposal

Shana and Brad, the 2012 Dream Wedding couple, will celebrate their wedding in Manteo on May 3, 2012.   The couple met in Tennessee and after dating for 4 1/2 years, Brad proposed to Shana on the beach.  With their love of the ocean, Shana and Brad chose to celebrate their love on the Outer Banks and won the 2012 Dream Wedding, valued at $45,000, during the Outer Banks Wedding Weekend in January.

As the wedding plans unfold, we want to share the Dream Wedding couple’s story.

Shana, tell us about Brad.  “Brad is a great story teller, which captured my interest initially.  He’s got a light-hearted nature, so he makes me laugh and keeps me entertained, especially with his Michael Jackson dance moves.  He has a way of getting me to lighten up and to not take life so seriously.  He’s honest, strong and caring.  Brad lightens my load and encourages me to push myself and I love that about him.  We have so much fun together and it never gets old.  He’s my best friend and my perfect balance.”

Brad, tell us about Shana and share the story of how you proposed.  “Shana has too many great qualities to list, but some of those qualities that are very attractive to me are how genuine and caring she is.  Shana always gives people the benefit of the doubt and is a very optimistic person.  She’s a dreamer and has a very creative side.  Shana has strong family and moral values, and is both confident and humble.  She lets me be me, which is a lot to handle at times, and my family and friends absolutely love her and love being around her.  Shana’s a very easy-going person.”

“Shana and I had dated for several years and I never questioned whether I could spend the rest of my life with her. We literally did everything together and she has always been the backbone of our relationship, and also my best friend.  After a year of dating, I accepted a position in Maryland which required me to relocate. The intention had always been for Shana to relocate as well, once I got settled and once she was able to find gainful employment. That time apart was difficult and it further validated the importance of having her not only in my life, but also without distance between us. I remember that being a time in our relationship when I was able to quantify how much she really meant to me and from then on it wasn’t so much about if I would propose, but more so about when.

Every year, we spend Thanksgiving with her family in North Carolina and then head to Ocean Isle Beach to relax at her parent’s beach condo. Last Thanksgiving was slightly different in the sense that Shana’s extended family, along with my parents and sister were also coming to the beach. The Friday morning after Thanksgiving, on an unseasonably warm day, we went for a stroll down the beach as we often did. Once we reached a beautiful area where the ocean meets the inlet waterway, I got down on bended knee, said a few things and popped the question.”

After the proposal, Shana attended the 2012 Outer Banks Wedding Weekend with her mother and future mother-in-law.  The weekend was highlighted with the announcement by WE TV’s My Fair Wedding host, David Tutera that Shana had won the Dream Wedding.  Check back as Shana tells us how she told Brad the amazing news.
