2015 Outer Banks Bride Magazine: Nautical Nuptials

If there’s one thing we love, it’s a romance that blossomed on the Outer Banks. Rachel and Drew vacationed on the sandbar for years, and when they got engaged it was only fitting to say “I do” here too! From booking local vendors at our annual Wedding Weekend to incorporating fishing poles in replace of a traditional arbor, everything about their wedding was drawn from local inspiration. Courtney Hathaway Photography captured all the nautical, timeless details that made this duo’s big day so magical.

Rachel and Drew’s Story:

Wedding Date: September 25, 2014
Color Palette: Navy and Hot Pink

How He Asked: While on vacation in Rodanthe, Rachel was watching the ebb and flow of the ocean and Drew was fishing. He frantically ran upstairs to where Rachel was sitting and told her she had to come to the beach to see something. As soon as her toes hit the ground, Rachel saw “Will you Marry Me?” written in the sand.

Favorite Wedding Memories: “After the ceremony and the pictures on the beach, the whole bridal party was walking up off the beach to be announced,” recalls Rachel. “It was so magical to come up the stairs off the beach with everyone and see our house lite up in hot pink. I loved seeing our vision come together!”

Advice For Future Couples Tying The Knot: “Come up with a theme or decision and stick with it. When planning gets hectic, remember you are doing this to spend the rest of your lives together.”

2015 Outer Banks Bride Magazine: Bohemian Seascape

When your love story beings were you were just kids, you know that your love is destined for greatness. With Sarah being a former Ocean Rescue Lifeguard and Tucker an experience sailor, it was only fitting they’d start lives together with Kitty Hawk Pier “I do’s.” Sarah only had two requirements when it came to planning her wedding: flowers in her hair and blue water by their side. Daniel Pullen Photography captured all of their details, created around a theme of navy, white and pastel blooms by the Flower Girls. We were smitten to have Sarah grace the cover of our 2015 Outer Banks Bride Magazine, and we can’t wait to share their love story with you today!

 Sarah and Tucker’s Story:

Wedding Date: September 19, 2014
Color Palette: Navy, White, Muted Pastels

How They Met: Sarah and Tucker first met while their parents were living in Heidelberg, Germany. Both of their families lost touch over the years, seeing that Tucker went to college and was deployed to Iraq, and Sarah went to a different university. Upon Sarah finishing school and moving back home, they re-kindled their friendship when Tucker and his friends needed a tour guide. And, as they say “the rest is history!”

Favorite Wedding Memories: “There’s one photo the Pullens captured of us waiting to go on the pier for the ceremony,” recalls Sarah. “It was the last quite moment before the celebration, and I remembered hearing the ocean and wind roaring yet there was a stillness that came over everything as we were about to walk down the aisle.”

Advice for Future Couples Tying The Knot:
Sarah: “Don’t forget who you are, and what you love. Your partner fell in love with who you are in those moments.”
Tucker: “The single most important thing to remember is that you married your best friend, someone who will see you at your absolute best and worst. Don’t be too proud to make yourself vulnerable to that person.”

With Duck Woods Country Club as their reception backdrop, and an all-star local vendor lineup, I promise you’ll adore all of these moments captured by Courtney Hathaway Photography!

Katie and Cary’s Story:

Wedding Date: May 31, 2014
Color Palette: Cobalt Blue, Yellow and White

How He Asked: Cary popped the question in one of the most intimate ways. In the comfort of their condo in Arlington, Virginia, he asked Katie to be his bride and she said, “Yes!” They traveled to Richmond the next day to see her Mom, who confessed she knew about her gorgeous ring and told Cary if he didn’t propose by the next time they saw her she’d spill the beans. No pressure or anything!

Favorite Wedding Memories: “Doing a first look was probably the best idea we had,” says Katie. “It calmed both of our nerves and seeing him just confirm we were making this life-long journey together and we couldn’t have been happier.”

Advice For Future Couples Tying The Knot: “As for as wedding planning goes, do what you want and not for other people – this will make your life easier when it comes to making decisions and keeping your budget in check!”

Cayla and Brenden’s Story:

Wedding Date: May 24, 2014
Color Palette:
Ocean Blue and Green

How He Asked: While vacationing with family, Brenden and Cayla rose their bikes down to the beach to watch the sunrise. They made it just in time to the point, and Brenden got down on one knee upon their arrival. Shortly after she said, “yes” his whole family came up the river on a boat with champagne in tow.

Favorite Wedding Memories: “Watching the sunset off of the pier with my new husband was one of the best parts,” recalls Cayla. “It gave us time to talk before heading back into the reception and dance the night away!”

Advice For Future Couples Tying The Knot: “Just take every moment in! Also, make sure that someone is always taking photos, because in the end you won’t remember everything that happened!”

Jessica and Tom’s Story:

Wedding Date: May 25, 2014
Color Palette:
Whites, Neutrals, and Bold Color Accents

How He Asked: With Christmas spirit in the air, Tom scheduled a horse carriage ride along the Susquehanna River and through the city. Wrapped in blankets and sipping hot chocolate, they rode by all of Jessica’s favorite spots and toward the location where he would propose. The carriage stopped by a tree where Tom had hung an ornament earlier in the day. After Jessica had read a note hidden inside the ornament, Tom was down on one knee!

Favorite Wedding Memories:
Jessica: “Tommy sent one of the groomsmen over before the ceremony to deliver a present to me. It was a beautiful solitaire diamond necklace! I read the card next, where Tommy had written that the diamond in the necklace was the stone in the engagement ring his grandfather gave his grandmother in 1944. Luckily the makeup artist were there to retouch my makeup!”
Tom: “My favorite memory was exchanging of our vows. It was such a personal experience, and even our guests later went on and on about how special that part of the ceremony was. In that moment, it felt like we were the only two people in the world.”

Advice For Future Couples Tying The Knot: “Trust your vendors and don’t be crazy-specific. These people are pros, and if you plan every last details you’ll inevitably be disappointed when one tiny thing doesn’t go as planned. Some of our favorite memories were things that went off the plan.”
